Google

Definition massage therapy and bodywork; Here it is, in its simplest form: A massage therapist will perform manipulations of muscles and other tissues (even tendons) to improve general health and well being. There are many types of Massage. Some range from gently adressing the muscles to more specific techniques, which can cause more sensation in the body.

Massage Therapy has actually been around for centuries in nearly every culture of the world. It has a powerful effect on the body as a whole, but has specific effects on the circulatory, lymphatic, musculoskeletal, and central nervous systems. It is also beneficial for stress, anxiety, depression, and other emotional issues.

"What is Massage Therapy? Is the question I am asked most frequently. This is probably because people want to have a more solid definition Massage Therapy and bodywork VS. the "other" types of massage: "massage parlor" work, for example.

During the 70's and 80's, there was a down turn in the therapeutic nature of massage, as the illegal type of "massage parlor" activity increased. Now, however, the public is beginning to once again recognize the benefits of massage as a legitimate, non-sexual, ancient healing art, and even hospitals are now implementing licensed programs into their practices!

When talking to a Licensed practitioner, ask what style of work they do, and if you are unfamiliar with a particular modality, do not hesitate to ask them what it is! Most LMT's these days call themselves Massage Therapists instead of "Masseuse", or "Masseur".

In essence, the definition of massage therapy and bodywork has changed back to its former true meaning as a holistic healing art form. Millions of dollars are now spent annually on it as well.

Tip: It is better to get all the information about what to expect in the coming session than to rush into it blindly. Be sure to mention everything you can about your body on the health intake form and over the phone. If you take the time to do this, your chances of having a great session will increase tremendously!

Here's a video I found from a west coast therapist. Our patterns of flow are very similar.
